Colony High School’s second semester is off to a fast start! The transition has been smooth and students are geared up to finish the year strong! It is hard to believe but graduation is five months away! I look forward to having our graduation at the Titan stadium May 21, 2014 at 6:30pm.
I am grateful for the faculty and staff here at Colony. Every teacher and staff member continues to work diligently to ensure that all students are proficient in their subject area.
Our work of ensuring quality academic programs continues undeterred. Our 10th grade students are poised to take the California High School Exit Exam February 4th and 5th. This is an extremely important exam. Students who do not pass the exam will not eligible for graduation. All 10th grade students are reviewing intensely for the exam. I implore all 10th grade parents to assist us by having your students study for the exam. Released questions from the exam are posted on line at www.cde.gov. We will be offering Saturday classes during the month of January and February. We expect all our 10th grade students to take advantage of this opportunity.
This year continues to be exciting and challenging as we continue to look at learning in the context of our school and to increase student achievement. As you are aware, we have been deeply engaged in implementing the Common Core. The Common Core is a set of new standards that has been adopted by 45 states in the country including California. These new standards emphasize higher order thinking skills and college readiness and will be assessed. The Smarter Balance assessments has replaced what we use to call the STAR test. These new assessments will be computer based in addition to some in class assessments. During the 2015-2016 school year, our students will be assessed using this computer based technology. To this end, we will conduct practice assessments on computers this year and next year to ensure that our students are familiar and comfortable with the technology.
In order for our students to be successful, it is important that all students are in school daily. Students who are not in attendance miss out on valuable instruction. It is imperative that our staff have the opportunity to work with your students. Please do not hesitate to give us a call. It is our pleasure to be of assistance to you.
As always, we know that it is our partnership with our parents and community that ensures our students success. We appreciate your support and patience.
Please feel free to contact me any time.
